Free money withdrawals worldwide, an uncomplicated and quick application process for the credit card, attractive interest rates and low fees when used at home and abroad characterize high-quality credit card offers. However, such general characteristics are not always equally relevant for every credit card user. For example, if your main focus is using your credit card abroad, domestic fees might be secondary to you. In such a case, aspects such as comprehensive international travel health insurance and low fees for foreign assignments become more important.
In Germany there is an impressive variety of over 1,000 different credit cards, each of which offers its own conditions and special additional services. The main differences between the credit cards lie in the issuing institution and the way in which outstanding amounts are paid:
Credit Card (Revolving Card): This type of credit card provides a classic credit line. Consumers have the option of repaying the loans they have taken out in installments using an installment payment function – of course with interest being taken into account.
Debit Card: Debit cards are usually linked to a checking account from which the expenses incurred are debited shortly after the transaction, similar to a debit card. They do not offer a separate credit limit and are therefore particularly suitable for young people and those who want to pay conveniently online without exceeding their budget. However, caution is advised: the debit card can use the overdraft of the current account, if available, which is often associated with high interest rates. If you are planning larger expenses that exceed your current account balance, you might be better off with a classic credit card.
Charge Card: A charge card allows you to use a credit line, but without the option of paying in installments. Instead, a total invoice is created every month, which the customer must pay in full. This means that there are no debited interest charges when using the charge card’s credit limit.
Prepaid Card: Prepaid credit cards can only be used after they have been topped up with credit. Payments are then deducted from this credit until it is used up. The card must then be reloaded again. You cannot take out a loan with this card. Prepaid credit cards are sometimes also available without a Schufa query and are therefore particularly suitable for people who want to keep a close eye on their finances or do not want to exceed a set budget.
